This substance is chemically inert, but has useful physical properties, leading to its employment in diverse areas. It is used as insulating oil in high voltage electronics. In medicine, it is used as a breathable fluid in partial liquid ventilation, in ophthalmologic procedures, and as an expectorant, emollient or dermal protective.
